Speed limits on 40 and 81 are 70, so you'll get run over if you run slower. I'm fortunate enough to be able to drive to Windrock so I've got to maintain speed to get there. 4.88's would have their advantages, I just want you to be aware that you'll lose the top end. I feel like I was inadequately prepared for that when I got through with the process. First gear is almost a granny gear and sixth is basically 50mph and up. There's also zero appreciable difference in mpg, though I suspect that is due to getting on the highway which sets me at 2700-3000 rpm's with your gas mileage sweet spot being a little lower.

Then I think it’s safe to rule out a clutch issue.

Nah, I appreciate the info for sure. I don't plan on using this as a DD much longer so I figured 4.88 might be the way to go. Also, I have 80K miles on a Jeep I bought new on September 17th 2007. I don't hwy very much. It would be nice to test drive both a 4.88 and 4.56 with similar specs to mine but that would be a tall order. Cheers!

Asheville isn't that far away and while I've got some extra weight, I'm in the same ballpark of 2.5" and 35's with a manual trans. I'd be up to let you take a spin. It'll also give you a feel on an aftermarket clutch to see if that's where you want to go.

I'd appreciate that. My schedule is opposite most people's as I work in the restaurant industry but that would be great.

I have a 4dr JK with alot of extra accessories and gear with 4.56 35's manual trans and live in North Georgia and visit TN, NC, etc. Here's a video just to give you an idea or some tips.

I'm liking the 4.56's that you guys are recommending. Thanks for this video.

There is an important difference between Dirt Hammers and I- I've got the same 3.8 that you do, he's got the 3.6 which makes more power and doesn't need the extra gusto that we do.

I would prefer to test drive something as similar as possible for sure. Let's keep in touch.

All you've got to do is PM me, I'm in the area. You're welcome to come on up and drive it, if you think you'd like to see what the gears look like on the trail then we can go to Windrock or if you know someone/ something around Hurricane Creek, NC- I'd be up for either and you can really feel what it can do.
