Default My axle is too weak for 4.10 gears?!

Hey everyone,

Let me start by saying everyone at this forum has been incredibly helpful answering any (stupid) questions I have had about my new X and I appreciate it!

So, I went to my dealership to go ask about regearing and how it would affect my warranty. They had said that as long as I use their labor and parts it wouldn't be a problem (I know to get this in writing). Since I'm fine with getting the 4.10 that the chrysler uses for the rubicon (I currently have the 3.21 base model ) I was okay with that. Well the guy from the parts department goes back to look at the catalog to see how much it would cost me, and he comes back saying that my axle is to weak for the 4.10 gears and that the best I could get is the 3.73 (which hardly seems worth spending the money after market to do -- Maybe I'm wrong).

Just wondering if any of you fellow JK X owners who have regeared higher than 3.73 have heard anything like this, or is this a case of misinformed dealership staff. I plan on hitting up a different jeep dealership sometime later to ask there as well. The parts people at this one definitely didn't have their head on straight.

Thanks for any contributions.

Just an observation, but the dealership/parts department/tech guys don't usually know what they are talking about, I don't see how they can come from the factory set up that way but tell you something different.

Hope that helps ya.

My guess is a misunderstanding.

There is a spot in regearing to where the carrier must be changed to accomodate the new ratio. This spot is at 3.73 I believe. Meaning you would have to change the carrier to go to the 4.10. Ironically, this is called the "carrier break". Not that your axle will break.

Just a guess.

Just for the record...I have the same jeep with the same axles, and I am running 4.56.

Throw your 4.10's in there and wheel it man.

My guess would be the parts guy is somewhere out in left field.
As was posted and you most likely already know, many 07 "X''s came factory with 4.10 gearing.

x2 on the carrier break. The gear shop I called about installing a set of 4.10 take outs used the same term, quickly following it up with break meaning the point which a new carrier is necessary.

Find someone else to do the install, those guys don't know shit!

I am gonna take a long shot and say the parts guy was probably to lazy to look up the extra parts needed for your swap. You need more than just the ring and pinion, you need a new carrier as mentioned. I say this having run into this very issue before.

Parts Guy - "You cant do that for reason X."

Translation - " It is gonna take me 45-60 min to look up all those part numbers and lunch is in 15 min, I am just gonna tell the guy he can't do it."

I had my dealership install 4:88's from 3:21's without any problem at all. I did have to purchase a new carrier along with the gears, etc., but it is still under full warranty as they did the labor. No need for new axles, they work fine as long as your not going nuts off road.

I know this probably doesn't mean shit, but I'm curious. What did it cost you for the dealer to do the install.......and did you have them use OEM parts or did you bring in your own aftermarket parts?

Great Replies,

It looks like I'm going to get a different dealership on the phone to try to keep myself under the warranty.

Thanks again.
