You could swing a 20K engine swap on a 40K jeep but your hurting for gas money?

.... yeah, myself.. I don't even think twice about fuel consumption. I'm smiling while driving and when it's time to put fuel in, I just think about driving it again!

Given the decline in gas prices, it's currently similar to getting 40 mpg compared to the last many years. If someone can't afford to drive a JK now, they are 100% screwed when gas goes back up.

eyup... and if it goes up to the point that I'm disturbed by it, I've got my KLR650 to ride. Heck, it's been on more of the trails out west than my jeep has at this point!

On my 2 dr JK: Running an early LS (5.7, aluminum block) mated to a 4L80. Geared 5.13, and somewhat heavy beadlocks/ and tires (35's). Rear armor, skid plate, etc.
I'm managing all of 11mpg combo hiway/street driving. I'm struggling with such poor mpg, but would really need to hear what others have been experiencing with similar rigs. With no basis for comparison, can't decide if I can complain or not!
Thanks
Your gears are too low, revving way too hig in most situations. Drop to 4.56 or even 4.10 and you should notice a big difference.

The 4l80e is one heavy beast of a transmission and pretty much bullet proof and a lot stronger then the 6l80, but it has a ton of rotating mass, it's also only a 4 speed, this transmission was built for heavy duty use and to replace the th400, so that in fact is killing your fuel millage.

The 6l80 is a 6 speed lighter weight transmission with better gear ratios for highway driving and fuel acconemy, still strong but not like a 4l80e.

Do ya want bullet proof or fuel milage? Hard to get bolth some times. I personally am running the 4l80 with a np205 and doubler and saying screw fuel milage.

Also check if your o2 sensors are working proper. The ls motor will run even without the o2 sensors plugged in or broken, it just makes it slow and run rich, killing your millage. There are a couple diffrent types of o2 sensors used on ls swaps, one is grounded at the computer and one at the chassis, maybe you have the wrong o2 sensors for your computer?

Could always by a wide band o2 and see how rich your running. Also plug in a scanner into your dignostics port and see if your o2 sensors reading are fluctuating up and down or just staying at one level.
