Modifying stock front bumper for shackle mounts
ok. b/c i can't afford a new bumper and really don't mind the look of the stock .... is this possible?
here is my plan ..... are there any reasons why this would not be functionally sound?
1. remove plastic bumper and saw off the crush cans
2. drill out the treaded bolt in the stock tow hooks
3. bolt on a d-ring shackle mount to tow hook mount point (with stock tow hook in between) +/- welding
4. cut out square hole in stock plastic bumper for shackle mount to come thru
OR
can i just cut off the crush cans and weld on the shackle mount?
THANKS IN ADVANCED!

Looks like it would work to me. If the d-ring holes and the tow hook holes line up you are set. It would also be stronger because given the shape of the factory tow hooks you would be pulling straignt from the crossmember rather than having the lever action from above.
Post pics if you do it.

The Pure Jeep D rings will match up to the factory frame brackets, but I don't see how the heck it will work. Do you plan on removing the plastic bumper cover permanently? That's the only way. Because of the depth of the bumper at the impact locations where the crush cans are, the D rings will be behind the bumper cover. You'd have to cut access holes in the bumper cover for the D rings, because the crush cans actually fit inside the bumper cover where the square indentions are. The mounting points for the D rings are well behind that. I'm guessing 6" or more. The D rings would be completely hidden and hard to get to.

This is not what the OP is talking about. He is talking about reinstalling the plastic bumper cover. The frame rail ends are pretty deep behind the bumper cover, so the D rings would be completely hidden in the hole. Yours looks pretty cool, though.

so ... in order for this to work, i would need a spacer block between the shackle mount the the tow hook mount .....
in theory though .... the mounting point in strong enough.
