Metalcloak Thread

I have not read that using standard grease would cause premature failure but its certainly possible. If it does I would assume to get the characteristics they wanted from the joint material they used requires the "special" grease. Its not that they purposely sought out a rubber that would allow them some proprietary grease its just a function of the material. I don't think metalcloak invented the rubber compound likewise I don't think they invented the grease. With metalcloak gone, both would still be in existence. If the possibility of metalcloak going out of business someday is what keeps you from using them, the concern should lie with sourcing the joint itself not the grease needed to install it. Currie could go out of business tomorrow then what? no more johnny joints, what do we do when those wear out?

The instructions that came with mine actually say:
USE OF ANY OTHER LUBRICANT MAY SERIOUSLY IMPACT THE LIFE AND PERFORMANCE OF THE DUROFLEX JOINTS, AND WILL VOID THE METALCLOAK WARRANTY.

petroleum based oil/grease causes some rubber compounds to break-down. Sometimes it literally dissolves the compound and sometimes it causes shrinking and cracks. This is why they say to only use their grease. It is a silicone base grease.
