Its a good idea once in awhile. For sure if you submerge the winch

every month, I spool out the cable, spray the entire length with WD-40, and then spool it back in under tension (I hook it to a 30yd dumpster we have in our yard, with the JK in 4-lo and reverse and then winch it in)
No rust on it yet (its almost 1 year old and I live in an area where they salt the roads in winter time)

Is WD-40 ok, then? I was thinking more of a dry lube.

I use wd-40 because it is meant to prevent rust. thats really all I am trying to do. once the cable gets frayed/cut Im going to go synthetic.

WD 40 is great for this because it displaces water....as the initials imply. "WD" stands for "water displacement".
