Long Arm or Short Arm

Long Arm or Short Arm
I would like to purchase a 4" Full Throttle kit for my 07 JK. I want it to be able to handle the ruff stuff if needed, but will mainly ride on well to moderately maintained roads. There will always be the occasional mud hole. Do I really need the long arm I'd hate to spend that much money and not need it? I really would like my JK to remain reliable. My plan - 4" lift with replacement arms, M.O.R.E. 1" body and 35"x12.50" or 35"x13" tires, new driveshafts and 4.56 gears. Does any one see a problem with this set up, please let me have it!!

My long arms enroute from Fulltraction now!
Anyhow, For 35's you dont really need the long arm kit. If you have a 2 door, its something to consider. Check out fulltractions 3" ultimate kit. Its a complete lift to run 35" tires. I had this kit on my last JK for 26,000 miles. It handle and rode really nice and flexed great offroad. www.4wd.com has these in stock and ready to ship. They dont show them online yet, but they have them. Northridge4x4 has them CLICK HERE
If you have a 4 door JK, you wont need a new rear shaft, if you have an auto. You'll atleast need to replace the front.
They dont make 4.56 gears yet, Your options are 4.88's or 5.13 gears. 5.13's give you alot of pep, I would recommend them.

well, i wouldnt have just dropped a couple grand on a Fulltraction long arm if I didnt like the short arm version
I'm actually going to run 3" lift springs and shocks on the long arm and run 35's.
After the 35's are worn out, I'm going to try and stuff 37's with flat fenders.

Thanks!
I was probably drinkin a Full Throttle drink when I wrote that thread yesterday but meant Full Traction. LoL I have a X model, 2 door with Teraflex 2.5" budget lift. So, 3.5" to a 4" short arm and 35's should do me just fine. Superior 4.88 gears with a 6 speed manual trans. Will I need both drive shafts and also should I go 1310 or 1350. If money was not an object but you wanted to build a JK like mine that could handle the ruff stuff and still be highway friendly what would you do? You guys be patient with me, just tryin to learn from you guys. First Jeep I've ever owned, but grew up learning to drive a CJ5. I'm 36 and sold a 07 Escalade to get my JK, but of course had to by my wife what she wanted! (That Purchase Hurt My Wallet!!!!!!!!!!!!)LoL

4" is a lot for a JK for a few reasons. The first in my mind is because of the alignment geometry. Since the axles travel in an arc when they suspend and compress, caster is affected. The higher you lift the Jeep, the more negative caster goes. 4" is so much that it will significantly affect the caster angle, decreasingly it greatly and leading to instability on the highway. Not a good situation for a lifted Jeep. The longer control arms make up for this caster change in their length. So, it's not necessarily how ROUGH the stuff you're gonna go over that should determine long or short arms, but how high you're going to go. I would have to say yes, you will need the long arms if you want your Jeep to continue driving well. Also keep in mind that a lot of people have had driveshaft problems at the 4" lift mark. Replacement shafts might be something you want to consider as well.

Thanks!!!
What I needed to hear, thanks a lot. I like big but I want it to be done right the first time! Ex: Drive shafts, gears and long arm lift and tires all at once. Let me clarify "big" for me 3.5" to 5". The bad part is I've got to save the extra $ to travel to Georgia to have it all installed at once which I don't mind. There is not a shop in AL that I would let touch my JK. Well, there is one but why pay 3 times the normal rate of labor.
