Locker and gear instal
#11
OK...I have a 2dr x with a 30 in the front and 44 in the rear. I am regearing as soon as my tax check gets here. Going with 4.56's as I have the 6 speed so I should be fine. Now for the question...
I can't afford to put lockers in both front and rear....so is one better than the other? Does the size of gearing affect the ability to use a locker in the smaller D30? What are your feelings on the Aussie lockers? I like how they are somewhat automatic.

unless you put your Aussie in the last day or two the one your using was not approved to be installed in the new D30. Aussie just released the approved locker a couple of days ago. Yeah I know people have been putting them in all along and will tell you just use different thrust washers and it will work fine. Well if it were that simple Aussie would not have taken this long to come out with the one for the new D30. So I guess the people using them know more than the Aussie Engineer's. I think not. Here is there part #XD13227 for the front diff.

I had a Lock-Right in the rear of my TJ which I drove for near 80K never had any problems with it. You could hear a little clicking when turning but that was about it. I know people do use them for front lockers and seem to be happy with them. I'm not sure if they make one yet for the new D30 or if they are just putting them in because they seem to fit like some have one with the Aussie. There is differences between the Aussie and Lock-Right but they are very similar, The lunch box locker is not a perfect solution however it is a inexpensive fix that does work pretty well for the most part.

Lots of debate goin on up above...
You've got a 3.73 ratio. 4.56 with your 6-speed and tire selection sounds pretty alright to me You'll be happy.
As for the debate front or rear, selectable or auto....
What kinda wheeling do you do? Is this a daily driver? The answer to those questions can help alot.
You can always re-gear first and tackle locker install later...particularly with an aussie in the front, you can do that yourself....you could even install a selectable or other complete unit yourself as well, just takes a couple extra tools, some shims and new ring gear bolts, it CAN be done...ask dpoelstra
Some food for thought

To answer your questions...
Currently I have 3.21's
Yes it is a Daily driver...
As for wheeling....Rocks, not huge (blues and easy blacks)...some water and mud and sand.
I am thinking I should get the locker done now with the gears to save money. I would not trust myself putting a locker in...

I think more people need to have a little faith in their mechanical abilties...you'd be surprised what you can accomplish on your own. Though I understand people are very busy, and not everyone likes skinned knuckles and such....but the Aussie can be installed by the do it yourselfer...heck so can locker installations and gears, just takes a few more tools and some knowledge.
Anyways...I have no personal experience with auto lockers at all, front or rear...I do agree with you, they sound GREAT...Rhino seems to have some knowledge and experience here...and there a tons of people with them installed on this forum and most people swear by 'em.
The great thing is...you really could have your gears done now, and save yourself some cash and have an aussie installed later in the front by yourself...or a friend perhaps??
The other thing to consider, do you have snow in your area?

Maybe a 1/4" movement differently not a quarter turn. There is something wrong for sure, I don't know what but I don't think its the lock-right that causing it. When you find out please let us know.
