JK upgrades
My jeep is still completely stock except for my sounds system but I've got about $300 to spend on an upgrade what would be the best upgrade to start out with?

differential skid plates!
If you are doing anything off road I would look into a rear differential slider and then a front differential skid plate. I had mine on before I went off road. The rear protects the differential and the sensitive end of the drive shaft.
rear around $300

If you wheel it, I would say recovery gear, skid plate, cb etc... I didn't see anything on your profile about your current setup except mostly stock. Rubi take-off rails? The for sale section has a lot of things that could start a build.

Don't do anything to it. As soon as you start playing with the jeep it will never run the same. I wish someone told me that before I put on the left and tires. Now every weekend I'm under my jeep trying to see what is broken or why is it driving terrible.
Great example from another guy on the forum:
So, I rlaced my factory go-kart tires with some 285/75R16's and my fuel economy plumited from 21 to 14.5. I replaced my 3:21s with a set of 4:10's and it did nothing. The jeep has been recalibrated and the throttle body was cleaned a few weeks ago.
Stats: 2007 Wrangler X, auto tranny and 33's with 4:10 gears (yes I am sure they are 4:10).
Does anyone have any suggestions? I know that bigger tires always mean worse gas mileage, but it shouldn't have dropped this much.

This one of those times when, " you get what ya pay for..."
Do a lot more research and a lot of planning.
Figure out what you want the Jeep to be capable of and then more research.
Prioritize whats needed vs. wants and make your decision.
I have put a lot of money into my brand new 2011 Jeep and still planning on putting more into it.
Do your research and learn from those who are rich and those that were rich before getting into JKs...
They are fun, do your best not to get discouraged with what's needed with every little upgrade you do to your rig!
Remember your torque wrench and locktite...
