Alright, I removed another .005” from the pinion depth shims (moving the pinion .005” away from ring gear centerline)


and my backlash is .004-.005” (which I know is Slightly under the very low). The pattern still seems very face orientated like it is not centered face to flank. Here is the pattern:

The total pinion shim thickness is .020”, which seems very thin. When I first set up the pinion I had .050” for the shim thickness which put me at 2.625 for the pinion depth. Isn’t 2.625” the correct distance from the centerline of the ring gear to the pinion head? That pinion depth resulted in the very first post where there was a large difference between the toe and heal for the drive/coast sides.


I feel like I am not making very much progress because the face to flank just doesn’t seem to be changing. Any help would be much appreciated!!
