What's the point of the 2x4 again? Also, is it ok to lift the full back end by the differential?

In addition to the above the wood can be used to "extend" the jacks height. You can use a 2X4, a 4X4 post or... You get the idea. A block of wood that is sturdy enough and stable to support where you are jacking can be used. If you need a foot of extension...just get a new jack.
