I recently purchased a Quadratec Q11500is winch, and love it. The only issue I had was the rope snapped while winching. This was not because of load, or rubbing on a sharp service off the drum. It was because at the end of the rope (drum side) there is a metal tab that allows you to mount the rope to the drum. The mounting spot on the drum is fairly high up the side wall. So even with a few wraps on it you can till see the metal tab. I was only winching out of a mud hole to a tree about 30ft away. This is a 90' rope, so there was plenty of rope still on the drum. I am not even sure how it happened, i can only assume that some of the inner rope was near the tab, and under load rubbed on it. Well it sliced right through the rope. luckily it was in a few wraps, so i was still able to pull my self out. I called Quadratec, and the were very cool about it, and will be shipping me a new one.

My question is, does anyone have any tips when mounting a synthetic rope. Should I have the end of the tab facing a particular direction. Also when wrapping, I have heard to wrap the first 2 layers neat, then cross the others (about a 30 degree angle). I still feel that when pulling in line it could still hit that tab.. When I get the new one, I am going to tape that end so it has no chance of cutting again.

Yes, when winding it on don't neatly roll it as it can embed itself under a layer. Spool it on kind of crisscross and random.

Sounds like either an Install error or a pretty serious design flaw.

you can get one of these or make one. take all stress off of the attachment point.

Update to what i found. The new rope came in, and when i was taking off the old one i found what the issue was. It appears that the rope pulled out of the mounting tab, not cut. I am not sure how this happened since the rope was not out that far at all. I ordered the retainer that Tglynn suggested. It should help take the load off of the mounting point.

Looks like a bad crimp, or none at all. Another thing is the edges of the crimped mount are pretty jagged and sharp. I took a piece of heat shrink tubing, put it over the crimp tab and formed it with the heat gun. Keeps the edges of the tab from contacting the syn rope.
