I did the same thing - took me a while to figure it out. I was able to put it in the wrong way which made it even more confusing.

Hey guys, today I installed Smittybilt XRC8 Pro, connected all wires per diagram and long red one to the battery + and long black to battery -. However, its not spooling 
. Its totally dead, any idea why it could be and how to check if winch itself is good or not?

i had same problem... the wires the went into the plug for the controller were loose and eventually fell out.. reattached the wires into the plug, snugged em down, plugged controller into soleinoid and it works..
