It will also be easier to connect if the compressor tank has pressure in it. Try running the pump and then follow the same steps. If that still won't work then take a trip to home depot or to the local hardware store and just buy matching coupler and nipple. You can install them in the matter of minutes and then know you have a matching set.

Actually, I'm photographer so to shot some editorial portfolio that is about off season death valley hard core camping.

Pull the sleeve back and push the female fitting over the nipple then make sure the sleeve slides back down where the little shiny balls are not showing but are covered by the sleeve. I think your not getting the air hose fitting all the way on the compressor. If it all came as a kit and you didn't buy the hose seperate it should fit.

I went to viair headquarter in irvine.
and jason who is working in service department, fix mine.
so my compressor nipple has some problem. so they repair it and my cable also has some problem but it woks. so they give me brand new extra cable kit to me.
so I have back up. it works great.
