It is VERY easy to do yourself.
45 minutes tops if you have no idea what you're doing. There are more write-ups than I could shake a stick at.
I installed mine when I was 16 having ZERO electrical knowledge.
My switches are on the pillar

It would be worth breaking down the cost into two categories:
Hardware costs (the costs of the lights, a-pillar mounting brackets, and any upgraded switches, etc)
Installation costs (if you can't/don't want to do it yourself).
Check out what Northridge, Quadratec, and some of the other big shops are running for deals on the lights.
Hardware costs will depend on what model of KC or other aftermarket light you buy and what's included in the kit. There's halogen, HID, LED, and different beam patterns and wattages, size of lights.
Installation costs... for a pair of pillar lights and a switch, I can't imagine it being more than a 2 hour job, probably less than an hour for someone who is good. If you figure a mechanic's labor rate of $100/hr at a specialty 4wd shop, you shouldn't be more than $200 or so into the install.
HUGE cost savings are realized if you take the time to do it yourself, or pay in pizza/beer to a friend who can help.

Electrical fires are much harder to start when installed properly. The harness KC provides is great quality and has fuses where there need to be fuses.
*Disclaimer* Unfortunately fires can also be started from OEM equipment, and it's nothing to joke about. Always use caution and follow instructions.
