Not true, 4lo will help but you can still overheat the transmission and get the hot oil light.

Maybe so. Never happened to me, though. Over 100,000 miles. I've only had it come on in 4hi. Different conditions may cause different things. Mine has only come on while climbing Ophir and Imogene in Colorado. 13,000+ feet are tough on the old 3.8 ;-)

4hi over those passes is your first problem. You should be in lo going up and descending. Much easier on your tranny and transfer case.

4Hi first gear will help keep it cool too. Long steep grades stay out of Drive and 2nd gear unless you have a trans cooler.

This^^^^

Those trails are my back yard, 4lo is your friend. In 2010 I met a guy at the top of Imogene who stopped me an asked if my '09 JKUR was "overheating" on the way up. I said no and asked what had happened. He had a brand new 2010 Rubi Unlimited and had somehow gotten it to the top from the Telluride side in 4hi, "Hot Oil"and the chime going the whole time. I showed him how to engage 4lo, said the salesman told him he'd never need it.

Not sure if it's applicable or not, but when I was on the trail with some guys they told me that when you're in 4lo to shift the trans into neutral so it can cool. It may be the same concept in 2WD, but I have no idea because I drive a stick and never looked into it.

Not as cool as 4lo Drive. If it can't get to 3rd gear, the torque converter will not lock. It makes a lot of heat when unlocked.
In 4lo Drive, it may be able to get to 3rd, where it can lock.

Default Hot Oil

Hello all, this is my first post, as I have been reading about the HotOil message went while JK was in use. My light came on this morning, I remote started 15 or so minutes later I went out to go to work and Hot oil message activated along with the ESC light it was a cold start and was about 32 degrees. Everything was fine last night.

Shouldn't happen by just idling. I'd have it looked at.

Default this happened to me

in big sur on the old coast road. I was in 4 hi though I don't think it happens in 4 lo but I could be wrong. any way the solution is put on a trans cooler. When you look at the newer jeeps they ales' to have a trans cooler.
mine is an 08. rubicon auto unlimited. since the trans cooler went on no issues ever.
