Homemade tube fenders?

Yeah, I've been digging around and it seems that the consesus is the JK sheetmetal is too flimsy to support a substantially strong, metal flare. So options are
1. risk damaging your body when your heavy gauge flare rips your body panel to shreds.
2. cut your plastic fenders
3. Pay a local shop $$$$ to fab up something that will tie in with some frame mounted rock rails and steel bumpers.
But then it might end up looking like an exoskeleton. IMO

I cannot wait to see some photos of them. Do you think they will be compatible with the cardboard hood I just made?
