Default Hitch mounted spare tire carrier?

Has anyone ran one of these setups? All the true bumper/tire carriers on the market are too expensive for me and I really want to get the weight of the 35" spare off my tailgate.

I foudn this universal hitch tire carrier for $75. It doesn't swing out but would at least transfer all the weight to the hitch instead of the tailgate.

Anyone ever ran something similar to this or is it a dumb idea? i was thinking it wouldn't get the spare high enough but i guess i'd have to order one to figure that out.

Interesting... I wonder if there is a lot of side-to-side clunking with it. I know that even with shims and tightening mechanisms, all of my bike carriers have always clunked around when driving with them on...

I may fab something up that works the same way - except supports the weight of the spare tire on the gate rather than carrying all of it.

I've never seen anything mounted to a hitch that didn't look ............. dorky. It will stick out farther, wobble more and be in the way every time you want to open your tailgate. A lot of people keep a 35" spare on their stock carrier without problem.

For the cost, it's a great idea. Especially if want to carry dual spares for an expedition, or a single if haven't yet bought a frame-mounted tire carrier.
