I store my hi-lift in the garage when I go on trips . They are not totally useless but are close to it since the invention of tow ropes/other vehicles pulling and or winches. There is a storage system for across the hood hinges and seem to work well but your windshield washers will then clean the jack. But prcing for these is pretty reasonable.
