I have the 5.7VVT in my 2007 JKU and I love it, great power, tends to want to push through the brakes a bit in 4low. I am running the AEV kit and have to say IMO it is the most factory set up out there. You won't be disappointed going with the 5.7VVT. The only thing I was a little disappointed with was the fuel mileage, but not a big deal.

If its just the intake manifold on the 5.7 you don't like, with simple modification the 6.1 intake manifold fits. I remember this from my LX days. As for the swap in general, I am waiting for someone to come out with a LS swap. Lighter platform, better power, better fuel economy and a helluva lot cheaper than a Hemi. Not to mention, only 8 spark plugs and stupid amounts power gains with simple cam and head swaps.

if I am looking at motors online, how would I tell the difference between the original 5.7 and the 5.7 VVT?

The "original" 5.7's have a different intake and engine cowling on top. Additionally the coil packs are different. Thats about it for the exterior looks. The DR motor and the LX motor differ in the location of the front end accessories. I have just installed a DR 5.7 in my 09 mainly because i got a great deal on the motor/trans. Otherwise I would have installed a 5.7LX due to the accessories being in the same spot as the 3.8 almost eliminating ac, and power steering line issues. The newer, vvt motors have the internal changes in addition to the cosmetic changes. If you plan on doing it yourself, look for either a 5.7 or 6.1 from a grand cherokee or commander. You dont have to change many things to get them in. For mine I swapped headers, mounts and had to relocate my power steering reservoir and coolant bottle. It wasnt hard to do, just a little more work. There really isnt that much of a difference in the performance of either motors of the same size, just a little horsepower and maybe fuel econ. But definitely shoot for an LX.
