Question Help with tire size!

I'm getting ready to order tires soon & need you all's input as to which way to go.

I've narrowed my choices to 265/75/16 and 285/75/16.

Both will be Treadwright Guard Dogs and I have to make do with the stock steelies

Do you think it's woth it to go to the 285s?

There's an addtiional wait time from Treadwright as well as the fact that they'll only provide about a half inch extra ground clearance...

I believe that spacers are also needed with 285s, not with 265s.

Any opinions welcome

If you're not wanting to go extreme offroading I would go for the 285's Those should be ~32 inches once mounted and having the weight of the jeep sitting ontop of them. How you figure out the size of the tires is like this.

You take 285 and mutliply it by the second number 75 but it's .75 not 75 That gives you 213.75 and when that is converted to inches it's 8.25" that 8.25" is the space from the tread that makes contact with the ground and the rim so your side wall. So you have two sides of that 8.25 x 2 = 16.5. Then you have to add in your rim size which is 16. So you are given a overall tire size of 32.5" (no weight or air) Once it is filled with air and jeep is on it should squat it down to 32".

285 * .75 = X value. X value * 2 = overall sidewall height of tire + Rim hole size = Overall Tire size. (Don't forget to convert the 285 mm into inches after you mulitpy by .75)

Bigger is better. If you don't go with the 285's, you will regret it.

Wink I know, I've been trying decide for awhile....

Just wanted to double check is all.

Also, are spacers a must with the 285s? I mean can I drive home from the tire shop with no issues?

The rubbing is on the sway bar at full lock, correct?

BTW, I got my jeep from Satllings in Cairo. Great customer service

go with the 285s. 265s came on my jeep and they were small. 285s look nice without having to worry about regearing etc. Check my sig below for what you need. Spacers yes. They should be 1.5" hub-centric. I got mine on Ebay for $118 for 4 a year ago. Don't think you can find those anymore so go with Spidertrax or those red ones.

Thumbs up Thanks for the reply!

So you've got the steelies with 285s? Any problems getting them mounted? Any abnormal tire wear?

I've seen mixed opinions on whether the steelies are too narrow for 285s, hence for asking these questions.

Steelies? No. these are the Mopar 16x7 5 spoke alloys cept' in all silver. no black paint accents. 16x7s are not too narrow. in fact ALOT of people run 285s on 7in wide rims, and not just jeeps, trucks too. They work great. I've gone wheelin with them with no bead loss and aired down. They look really good. I know the tire websites say 7.5 is the minimum for 285s but 7 will work. Mounting was easy for the tire dude. No different than any other tire hes mounted and no strange wear even after 15,000 miles, rotated once. now, stock rims with the 6.25 back spacing you will need 1.5in spacers to avoid rubbing while turning full lock. Don't be scared of spacers either. I installed those myself 15,000 miles ago and still cool.

Wink Thanks for the encouregement!

I appreciate the help. I think I will go for the 285s then, since you've had no issues for 15K.

This is why I love this forum
