Default Help!!! newbie with delimma regarding 4" super lift kit

Ok... so i'm a newbie with a stock 2008 JK unlimited...

That being said, i want to modify my jeep at a slow, but steady pace. First comes suspension, then wheels and tires, then bumpers etc... I found the following ad on craigslist and i need to know if this is too much too quick or "too good of a deal to be true". I tried to price it online at superlift's website but it said "call for price" (which i will do tomorrow). SOO... can anyone who has experience with this kit give me any feedback? If i install it and move to 35" tires on 16" wheels will i need regearing or experience steering issues?
Am i an idiot to be buying used? These sound like the kind of questions that planman can help with but i would greatly appreciate ANY feedback. Thanks for taking a minute to direct a newbie in the right direction. Ballpark of how much am i looking at for an install? (also, is my meager 12,000$ jeep fund better spent somewhere esle)

I'd be interested in hearing what the price he wants for this is. That, and what your tolerance level is for buying used (i.e., without warranty) is.

However, in general, if all you do is a 4" lift and 35s, then depending on what factory gears you have you may vary well want to regear. My Jeep came factory with 3.21s and drove it about a week with my 35s before I regeared. However, I know people who have the 4.1 Rubicon gears and they say it's "not that bad".

A lot of the "regear or no regear" question will depend on what your tolerance is. My only recommendation is to plan on eventually regearing, but do give it a shot without the gears and see how you like it (or don't as the case my be). Then you will have a true sense for how important a regear is in your own case.

On the note of "steering issues" and "too good to be true"... not all kits are created equal, and often times with used not everything that was originally included is still included. For a lift this size I highly recommend adjustable track bars, and control arms. If you are a 2-door and/or an automatic transmission you will also want drive shafts.

For comparison (on completeness and price), I recommend that after calling the Craig's list guy you immediate call Dave @ Northridge 4x4 and explain to him that you are looking for a 4" lift and see what he recommends. Compare the price (and completeness) of the kit he quotes you to what your seeing used... I think you find Dave's prices to be very competitive.

Call David at Northridge. I ran a Superlift 4in for a little over a year. I think I paid $800 for the kit shipped with bilstein shocks. It's a decsent kit, but the rear springs don't hold alotta weight well and the front adj trackbar leaves abit to be desired as far as beefiness. The kit uses cam bolts , which I never used and got adj front lower control arms to adjust castor. I've changed all my stuff out to Teraflex, which imo is a much better grade of suspension. The springs hold weight really well and the components are twice as beefy. Do it once, do it right and save yourself some $$$ in the long run.
Also, I suggest doing the install yourself, use the write-ups on here and also check your Staging Area. There's alotta members who'll help you install and all it'll cost you is some beer and pizza, if that.

Right now I have the same setup, but I am not getting the gas milage that I want to. I am getting pretty much 16 all the way around, which from what I hear is pretty good. But, I would like to get it up to around 18-19 with the new gears. I have chosen 5.13s waiting to be installed but now am second guessing myself if I should have went with 4.88s instead...

if i got 16mpgs all around, i wouldn't mess with gearing.

i get about 9mpgs with a cai and mbrp exhaust and if mpg's were good I wouldn't have any complaints.

i think my performance is just fine.

just my 2 pennies

Nah...it can get better. Plus I hate the fact that it drops out of overdrive on the slightest of hills. I want the best of both worlds, resonable to good gas mileage and good pep..I'll get it, it's just a matter of getting the right gear combo for my setup..

I picked up a 4" x-series rough country lift (all arms adjustable) from topguncustomz for 850 shipped. I added a dropped pitman arm (off of ebay $60.00) and when I got the alignment they said it was very close...

just wondering if you still have your stock airintake. I know when i went to a cold airintake i lost gas milage in my dodge ram 1500. Put your stock air intake back on and use the stock k&n air filter , or plane filter. There is a fine line of things to help you get good gas millage, vrs more horse power. Mess around with trial and error. Find out what works out best for your ride.
Im on 37's with 4.10's ,6 speed trans, gibson single cat back exhaust,k&n in stock filter box,and hypermax programer, 5.5 inches of lift . My gass mpg average from last winter to now is 15.7 mpg. My summertime mpg is 17-23.
