I would consider not running around town with mine, but I would have to put it on for most beach runs, highway trips, and off road experiences.
And it's a pain to put the carrier back on, not to mention the annoyance of running the wires for the license plate light kit.
So I just drive around with mine all the time. It helped out the other day when I was annoyed with my wife and stupidly backed into a dumpster. If the tire hadn't been there, I would have taken a shot to the body. Only damage I got is some blue paint on the sidewall.
