Agreed. I didn't think of that. You can buy 3w LEDs at most of the big electronics component distributors for about $5/LED (mouser, future, digikey, newark). Problem is, like you said, pulling the old one off the board and putting the new one down on the board.

I see a 9 inch bar (12 leds) is available for under $100 shipped (non sponsor vendor) at 2160 lumens (not the 14400 lumens as pictured by the OP) which may stack up better price-wise against KC's or the like.
I also find the 42" bar for $1396, not the $1600 mentioned.
Model -- Length -- # of LED Lights -- Watts -- Amp Draw -- Lumens
XIL-80 -- 6" ------- 8 -------------------- 24------- 2 -------------- 1440
XIL-120 - 9" ------ 12 ------------------- 36 ------ 3 -------------- 2160
XIL-200 - 12" ---- 20 ------------------- 60 ------ 5 -------------- 3600
XIL-400 - 22" ---- 40 -------------------- 120 ---- 10 ------------- 7200
XIL-600 - 32" ---- 60 -------------------- 180 ---- 15 ------------- 10800
XIL-800 - 42" ---- 80 -------------------- 240 ---- 20 ------------- 14400

What you've all been waiting for: Beamshots from the XMitter bar. Sorry these are preliminary and not compared to my HID's. All photo groups are shot with the same exposure. Keep in mind - the bar is merely resting on the pushbar of my patrol car. Also, it was raining and foggy out, so there is a slight white haze and the light didn't go as far as it would on a clear day. The first three photos are as follows:
1. Patrol car, low beams only
2. Patrol car, high beams only
3. Patrol car, only XMitter bar activated.
The next two are of an industrial complex across the canal and across the street - The first is with no illumination at all and the second is with the XMitter bar:
This last photo shows it on the push bar of my patrol car with all of my lights activated. IT's so bright, it washed everything away.
This thing is positively amazing! On my next day off, I will take photos against the HID's.

OMG!!! That's like having a helicopters spot light on your Jeep!!!

Mounted and ready to go!!!
I went and made the mounting bracket out of 6061 aluminum. I milled out the contour of the roof rack bar, put some mounting holes and then made some counterbore holes for cap-head screws to mount to the Wild Boar rack. This setup is STURDY!!!
Anyways... here is is, all mounted up and working. I will post some beamshots with the XMitter and HID's tonight!
