Default Goodyear Wrangler Dura Trac Tire Problems

Thought I would post up my experience so far with these tires.

Had a set of 275/70/18 mounted on my stock wheels and an alignment done at the same time. No problems at all with the stock tires before the swap, they were just worn down and due for replacement.

After having the Dura Tracs mounted and balanced I experienced some vibration and steering wheel shake at highway speeds. Took it back and had them rebalanced. Still had the vibration on the highway so talked with the manager at Sears and we decided to have them dismounted and rebalanced starting from scratch with their best tire guy. This time the vibration is the worst yet at 55-65mph. The steering wheel shakes and the whole car vibrates. I also noticed there were a LOT of weights on the wheels all three times they were balanced. Multiple weights on each wheel with atleast three wheels having one ore more 4-5" long weights, including one on the outside of one of the front wheels.

The Sears tech rode with me and experienced the same vibration so the manager ordered a new set of tires after talking with Goodyear. Hopefully that will fix the problem.

I have read nothing but good reviews about these tires so hopefully I just got a bad set....Anyone else have a similar experience with these tires?

Will let you know what happens.

This is weird. I'm like you and have heard nothing but good things about these. I was looking at getting a set around February next year so I'm gonna subscribe to this to see if this is a common problem or you just got unlucky. Let us know how the second set does, and hopefully that fixes the problem.

I had the same exact problem but with the Goodyear Silent Armors. I had a shimmy at 45-55mph. There was a ton of weight on my rim too. I tried everything to fix it. I had it aligned 3 times, bought a new TeraFlex steering stabilizer, rotated the tires, re balanced the wheels via a roadforce balancer at $50 per tire. basically anything possible i did and it did nothing. after a few months i got sick of it and went to goodyear and asked for a new set of tires. They offered to swap out for my current duratracs and immediately it was fixed. Hopefully a new set will solve the problem for you!

I have no problems with my duratracs. Did they balance on a "spinning balancer" or whatever that's called?

Ran the duratracs for 53k miles and loved them, had 11/32 tread left on them and I sold them to a buddy at work.

The balance problem is not uncommon, and when you get it resolved you will probably love the tires.

I had to get hub rings to help my motometal rims center up on the hub. Another thing you can have them do is balance the rim before mounting the tire, and then have them "roadforce" balance it. Other than its a different way of balancing, I don't know what exactly it is.

Mine only took hub rings and roadforce to get them dialed in. After that, I rotated them (5tire) about every 5k and enjoyed them.

These tires have been nothing but good to me and dont have a bad thing to say about them. What im curious about is you mentioned you had an "alignment" done. What exactly did they align on a stock JK your steering wheel, toe in maybe? Seems they monkyed around with something they werent supposed to and that could be causing the vibration. wouldnt hurt to ask the alignment shop what exacly they did to your JK

I've had mine for about 10,000 miles. And they have been wonderful. Great in water and great on dry pavement. Can't wait for a good snow to try them out. U must have just got a bad set.

Default Good

I've had mine for about 20k miles now and have no complaints on them. NO shimmy at highway speeds and they're almost silent for the type of tire they are.

My only concern is that after 20kmi they look like they're halfway gone or more (as compared visually to the spare). I notice this a lot now probably because it's in my head and I'm looking for it. I'm hopefull that I'll get at least 35-40k out of them for the price. --- Maybe I drive hard on them...I dunno.

Other than that, nothing but good stuff to say about them. And they look great!

When the new tires come in have them check the balance/true of the plain wheels. Strip off all the weights and spin the bare wheels. Check for runout and balance. Do not add any weights to the bare wheels just check where they are at. Mount the tire and balance. If it requires a large amount of weight mark the wheel/tire orientation. Break the beads and rotate the tire 180 degrees and rebalance. It should take far less weight to get them right. Personally I have never had a good experience with Sears tire department.

i hate to hear about your problems. i had a set of "35in" duratracs mounted last week and they all balanced "amazingly well" (according to the "best" tire tech at the goodyear tire place i bought them from). after mine were balanced it was like butter right around 65 mph and a little less than 30 lb of pressure.

i really hope you get this sorted. :(
