Just got some 305/70r16 Mickey Thompson MTZs mounted on procomp 7089 wheels. Tires weigh about 62 pound each and the wheel is probably about 23 lbs. So about 85lbs for the setup.

Money is a little tight right now but I don't want to tear apart my rear tailgate. I did mount the spare on there and it is not touching the bumpstops so I need to address that soon. So my question is should I go with the daystar bump stops and MBRP reinforcement brackets? or shoudl I look into a carrier? I would like to retain my 3rd brake light though if I go with a carrier and rear bumper combo.

Thoughts?

Obviously the aftermarket tire carrier is the best long term solution, but the bracket and bump stops would work for a while if you easy on it

Definitely extend the bumpstops so there is no wiggle room for the tire and start saving for a tire carrier. I wouldn't spend the cash on the brackets.

A new carrier/hinge set up sooner the better. My gate hinges blew out after a short period of time with Nitto 33's causing the gate to clunk up and down over every bump.

If it were mine, I wouldn't spend any money on a short-term solution, and I'd get a carrier as soon as possible. I always felt like the stock setup was a pretty cheap deal and it feels worse with a heavier tire IMO. Worst case scenario, run with the spare flat on the rear floor for a while until you're able to bolt something on?

anyone know of a carrier that retains the 3rd brakelight? I was looking at the e-auto ones possibly. Otherwise going to nab the daystar bump stops for now

I had Micky Thompson 35 MTZ's and after about 10K my gate started to rattle due to a worn top hinge. Id say you could get by for a short time. It doesn't sound like a good idea to not have a spare with you at all, at least carry it inside strapped down until you can make other arrangements. I'm going with a Teraflex hinged tire carrier for now until I can afford an L.O.D. rear bunper/tire carrier. I can always take the teraflex off someday and sell it at a good price to someone else.
