The scenario as laid out with 35s, auto and then OD off, going up a hill at highway speeds you will kick down and flash to around 4k, which is peak torque and 90% of peak horsepower.

In other words, if it doesn't get you over the hill, neither will gears and the only prescription is slowing down.
