Gears... 4.56 vs 4.88 for a 6spd daily driver
I installed 315/65/R16 Duratrac's a week ago and so far the driving has not been bad at all with the stock 3.21 gears. I get up to speed reasonably quick, and can easily maintain 70mph plus on the highway if I stay in 5th. My gas mileage has also remained the same surprisingly... I am running no spare tire for the time being, which helps a bit as well..
I am now contemplating whether I should do gears at all. I plan to hit some trails this spring/summer, but nothing too serious.. If I do gears it will be either 4.56 or 4.88. I've been told to go right to 5.13's, but I strongly feel that would be too much gear for a daily driver. Now I am thinking that 4.88's would be too much gear for a daily driver as well. I would like to still be able to use 1st and not tach 3000rpms at 70 plus on the highway.. However, I don't want to go the 4.56 route then regret not getting the 4.88's!! Advice? And yes, I already looked at the chart...

Hello X, sound,s like you live in a high traffic area. You might stay with the 4.88's. I've got an 08 rubi w automatic and I just put the 35' tires on it. Now I can't use overdrive. It still runs good in the trails as long as I downshift to 2nd. So if you go to 4.88's you will be happy, in my opnion. I'm going to 5.13's because of my auto tranny. LOL

Why would he need to read this? He has a 6spd not an Automatic, plus he has a Dana 30 in the front and couldn't go with 5:38's.
Tough call on the 4:56 or 4:88's. If you are going to be wheeling it every so often, have mountain passes to climb on a few trips or pull a trailer I would consider 4:88's. Also, will you be adding any more significant weight in the future? Winch, rear bumper, cargo racks? I know when I bump up to 35's it will be 4:88's replacing my 3:73 stock gears.

I think you will be fine either way. As the chart indicates, 4.56 will take you close to stock and 4.88 will give you a little extra boost over stock. If you think you'll ever go bigger than 35s or add weight to your rig, as others have mentioned, there is no question that you should go with 4.88s. At the recommendation of several shops and jeepers with 4.88s (6-speeds), I personally chose 4.88. I agree that 5.13 is a bit too much for a DD unless you plan on driving hills on a regular basis and/or tow anything of weight.
