i just got in my 4.88 gears and as much as i cant wait to install them i dont know if it's the best idea. i have 33" duratracs on a 6 speed jk with the stock 3.21 gears now. I'm going to make the drive from new jersey to texas and on't know if i should hold off on the regearing until i get down there or to make the drive with the gears newly installed. its about an 1800 mile drive that i wanna make in one shot.
would the 3.21 gears be too much of a pain the ass for that?

Gear break-in is typically 500 miles.
I'd probably do that drive with the Jeep as-is, though, not because the 4.88's will be better or worse, but because I don't like making major changes to a vehicle before a major trip.

You should wait and regear when you have the tires to install at the same time. You should not plan to drive 4.88's and 33's anywhere that isn't close.

I agree... and gears can have some issues if not done correctly. It would suck to be on the side of the road half way there or back.

What are the install rates in Jersey?
Another reason to wait is there are shops in Texas that will do the swap for a grand, parts/labor/out the door. (and have been known to run specials including gusset installs).
Do some checking and see what you find...

With a manual, probably. Open the drivetrain FAQ's stickied at the top of this modified area and check the charts. Remember to use 'actual' tire heights and not mfg's specs. Tthose 33's probably measure out at 32" or a bit less when sitting under your JK.
Manual/32's/4.88's = a bit over 3,000 rpm at 70 mph. Most would think that is a bit high...
For comparison, an auto with that setup would be under 2500 rpm at 70.
