gear change for 35,s with auto trans, 50% highway 50% city driving 4:56/4:88/5:13
From what i have read most are happy with 4:88 gears, Mine is a DD looking at the charts and listing to local ring & pinion shops I would think 4:56 would be best if I do any Highway driving.
Question
anyone with 4:88 gears do alot of highway driving, and if so are you happy or wish you went 4:56

Auto: 5:13's
6spd: 4:88's
but if you are looking for more MPG: Then I would stick with 4:88's with the Auto.

Do the guys you are getting advice from even own a JK?
You will probably be better off listening to advice from people that:
a) own JK's
b) own JK's on 35's
c) own re-geared JK's on 35's
d) own re-geared JK's on 35's with auto's
'Most' of the d) people will tell you 5.13's (or 5.38's for rubi's). This keeps you from continually dropping in and out of O/D, and contrary to what you may believe, will improve mpg's.
But it's your money. If you want 4.56's - go for it...

I say 5:13's for an Auto, Seem perfect with 35's I think. Drove it from St.Louis to Moab and back. At 70 mph turns around 2300 rpm, at least on mine. Depends on actually how big your 35's are, some are smaller than others. Just my

If you only drive 50% highway you might get by with 4.88s. If you drive more than 50% highway, then definitely go with 5.13s. A lower top gear keeps you from being in third gear all day and improves gas mileage. You will get better gas mileage and better highway performace with 5.13s than you will with 4.88s, and 4.56s are just a waste of time and money.

I have a 2009 unlimited auto with 35's (actual 34.8") BF Goodrich KM2. 4 months ago I regeared to 5.13 and have NOT regretted it at all, it is the best mod since putting the lift and tires on. I now do alot more highway driving then offroading.

Check the chart in the sticky thread. 5.13s for sure with an auto. especially since you will later want 37s or maybe even 40s. Trust me, 35s will eventually look small. Do it once, do it right.

Best money spent
After spending a couple of years with 35s and 4.10 gears, I upgraded to 5.13 gears and it was the best money I spent on my jeep. Hands down.
Unlimited, 35s, and an auto trans.
Don't do anything less than 5.13s
I do have a guy in my area that did the 4.88 and wished he did the 5.13. Unlimited, 35s, and an auto.

What you won't see are people with auto's with 35's and 5.13/5.38 that wish they had gone 4.88/4.56. (I have seen two. One of them had a Hemi, so he doesn't count. The other, I don't recall his reasons, but I'll ignore him just the same...)

I own an unlimited with an automatic transmission and 35’s. I went with the 4.88 and I am very happy and so are all the other people that I wheel with that have the same set up. I think that people with 5.13 are happy too. There is less of a reason to go with 5.13 if you have a Rubicon because it has a 4:1 ratio transfer case. I had the opportunity to drive jeeps with both the 4.88 and the 5.13. There is not a ton of difference between the ratios. I went with the 4.88 because it is also a daily driver and the 5.13 would not give me the 14.5 MPG that I am getting now. If you can drive a couple of jeep with the gear ratios you are considering, that would be the best way to make up your mind. Take what you read with a grain of salt.
