Default The 20 year plan.

You never come out ahead spending money for mods to increase fuel mileage. It would take you 20 years to get back that $1900 with only a 2-3 mpg gain.

655 days / 20 yrs = 32.75 days per year

32.75 / 12 months = 2.73 days each month crazygrady127 is allowed to drive his JK in order to recoup the cost in exactly 20 years.

I don't think this 20 year plan is going to meet his needs as his original post stated, "I drive almost an hour each way to work every day (emphasis added)".

I filled up today for $3.21 a gallon I don't expect my JK to get 20mpg. 3.5 inch lift, 35 GY MT/K 's and 5:13 gears. And I get 15 city and 17.5 highway staying under 75mph. If you bought a Jeep for MPG it is live with it or sell it for a economy car.

I'm running 35's and an OME HD lift and stock 4.10's. In September I went to Colorado and averaged just over 17 mpg there with the OD on, around 13-14 while in the mountains and then about 15 mpg on the way home. It's been $2.99 a gallon here for a week or two. It's been a nice break.

Now calculate the savings of buying a $1900 beater that gets 35mpg vs his 14 and see how long it takes to pay it off and earn an additional $1900 to pay for the same mods everyone suggests to get the 2 mpg.

I bet it takes half the time to achieve the same results and have another car to rack the miles up on.

I shot low on everything so I could get as close as possible to 20 years, only missing by 17.

Not quite that easy. You still have maintenance, a true call for a 4wd or all wheel drive vehicle because the OP will face a fair amount of lake effect snow (likely driving to South Bend or Chicago), insurance and repairs. A degree of reliability, meaning a higher price than $1900, lower mileage than 35mpg because of all wheel drive, you would be hard pressed to find a shorter payback.

I filled up for $3.02/gallon yesterday. I'm with you, if I had been looking for gas milage, I wouldn't have bought a Jeep.

I do have a solution to the gas being expensive problem, though, which does not require replacing the vehicle. Move closer to work. That's exactly what I'm doing, going from a 35 mile commute to a 3.5 mile commute.

yep....all that stuff just destroys mileage....answer? Get rid of the jeep or get a beater honda civic or something. Any mods you make will only give you small gains and may simply not be worth it in the end.

Will the AEV Procal that is talked about give you the 1 to 2 mpg gain on a stock. Or does it only help on modded jk's?
