If only installing one I would go on rear. easier to steer in many situations without fronts locked.

Depends on your current set up and if your regearing at same time,

3.21 with regear ...front
3.21 no regear...rear
3.73 with regear...rear
3.73 no regear...front

Regearing 3.21s will take a new carrier up front so do the true trac there instead and save a little cash toward the purchase of the rear

Putting one in the rear D44 with stock gears will require it to be drilled out to accept 1/2" bolts, most after market gears are set up for both sizes

That's assuming that if your not regearing now your still going to regear at a later date and don't want to spend money you don't have to. But if your doing it now, shop around and you can find both for pretty good prices and do it all at once, itight be a little more now but you won't be paying for the install later so it'll actually be cheaper

I agree with this. I had to have all this done for re-gear and locker instal.

But with that said; I put the Detroit TruTrac up front, and a selectable in the rear. So far, I've only had to use the rear locker to make sure it works. A TruTrac in the front is actually pretty impressive, and doesn't affect daily driving / rain driving in 2wd. I have heard of people getting into scary situations where the auto locker in the rear will lock up in a slippery corner and spin the vehicle, but I don't know how much truth there is to that.

Ohh yes, a very good point. Im going to 4.88's so i guess that would make my choice for me then since i need to replace the front carrier either way.

Picked up front and rear from drivelineUSA for $860 shipped when I did mine, when most places wanted $650 or more each, so shop around

Do them both, then you won't have to pay the labor to rip the an axle apart a second time.

Eaton has a mail-in rebate ending 12/31, so it might be a good idea to buy now even if you don't install for a few months.

As a comparison, here are the prices at Summit: (free shipping)
Front d30 - 912A585 $390
Rear d44 - 913A589 $460
Rebate - $70
= $780

The truetrac is a gear driven Limited Slip, much more user-friendly up front than a full locker. Steering may feel a bit 'heavier' for a few days until he gets used to it, but nothing close to trying to turn with a locked selectable locker.
