Default Or fab tire carrier

I am looking at purchasing this tire carrier but I'm wondering how secure the spare tire is. Does it lock in so that it cannot be removed without a key or can someone just walk up and steal your spare?

Yeah they can just walk up, unscrew the "T" bolt and take it.

You'd need to get a wire rope and lock or something similar if you wanted to secure it.

The or fab carrier has a place to put a padlock so that the tire cannot be taken off without unlocking it first. The t-handle can be removed but the padlock would hold the plate against the tire.
Although the bar that the padlock goes on can be unbolted from the carrier, it would take a bit of finesse to get it off while the tire is locked to the carrier. However, it is possible.

The provision for a padlock is pretty good. The way I see it, if a thief really wants something, and they have the time, they are going to get it. It's a great tire carrier.

I have this installed on my rig with a Kryptonite cable lock thru the center. You hardly notice it. If a theif wants it bad enough they'll have to unscrew the two bolts holding the carriage on & take the whole thang. Click image for larger version
