Putting automotive batteries in the passenger compartment, quite frankly is a stupid thing to do. Not only do you have to worry about toxic and explosive gasses but you also have the worry of the batteries becoming projectiles in an accident. You got children? If so, you wanna see them after an accident where one of those batteries you put in the passenger compartment flew into one of their heads? Not a pretty site. I wouldn't do it.

Agree 100%. Do not put a battery any where near your passengers.

Update. I mentioned I got splashed with battery acid on my right forearm while working on a wrecked Pontiac Grand Prix. I didn't even notice it right away and by the time I realized what happened it was too late. Needless to say, it left a nasty burn about the size of a silver dollar and it took a couple of months to heal and left a nice red scar that remains today. Now imagine what you and your passengers will look like when one of those batteries under your back seat decides to explode...

I have seen a couple of new cars that have the battery in the trunk compartment next to the spare. I'm pretty sure that areas not vented.

As I recall my old VW bug had the battery under the rear seat.

At the risk of replying to a thread that's been quiet for 2 years, here's my thought...The VW's, as well as several other DOT approved vehicles had the batteries inside the passenger compartment. Nuf' said there, but as a precaution, if anyone else is thinking about doing this, it would definitely be a good idea to put them in a sealed (sealed from the passenger compartment but vented outboard) container like they have for boat batteries. That way, if they out-gas, it won't get to you, and any corrosion/spillage would be relatively contained. At the same time, if you don't go with a sealed battery inside the cabin, you're pretty much just asking for trouble IMO.

And this old thread was made long before Benchmark Designs went through the R&D to design a bada$$ dual battery tray and isolator kit for under the hood. The only downside that I can think of is that the kit doesn't work with a Hemi but, since I don't expect to get a Hemi anytime soon, the Benchmark kit is definitely on my short list.

I'd love to get both of them in the engine compartment like that.... but I'm running Group 31's and had to "chop and screw" my factory tray just to fit one.

Okay, I'm sure you have figured out that it was a bad idea to install batteries in the back of your jeep from the past 20 posts lol

Here is another option for you though:

Benchmark Designs has a great dual battery kit which was just featured in JP Magazine.

http://www.benchmark-designs.com/pro...ery_system.php

And here is a right up on it in the JK Forums:

https://www.jk-forum.com/forums/show...hlight=battery

Then for your air compressor you can put in an ARB that will also fit under the hood. You can find it here:

http://northridge4x4.com/proddetail.php?prod=ARB-CKMA12

Just a few ideas for you to consider. That's the set up I have ordered and getting ready to install.
