I like the look of 35's but to be honest regearing intimidates me because there are so many opinions on what to go to. Not to mention expencive so I can not afford to get it wrong. I have been some what happier now I drive without od engaged.

There are many options that can help you get some power and milage back but cost is going to be the main factor in all of them. Do you know what gears you are running now? That makes a difference is knowing if a regear will help enough for what you want.
As for downsizing your tires, that may not be a bad idea, but pesonally, I'd wait until my current tires were done so I don't waste a ton of money. Tire size doesn't make the jeep, but if you wheel a lot, bigger tires do help. It's going to boil down to personal preference and the hit you are willing to take on the wallet.
Good luck!
