Default Down size tires?

I have 315x70x17 Kumho mt's and was wanting to go to 285x70x17 at because this is my dd and I just want to gain some of my lost power back. There would not be much of a size change depending on the tire. Has any one done this and hated it afterwards. Its a cool lookin ride now.

I thought that over too. Regearing is cheaper than tires unless I ran into someone who wanted to swap. I was concerned if I regeared my mileage would get worse than what I get now (about 16 now). I drive about 30 miles to work and that would suck. I knew what I was getting into when I bought it so not expecting much.

Hmmm...let's run the numbers on this one. Say you go from 16mpg to 18mpg (which is better than I managed stock). Given a gas price of $3.77 and your driving 60 miles six days per week it would take you over 3 years to save enough gas to pay for $325 tires (inclusive of tax and mounting ect.).

Wait that means the you would have to make those tires last 62,000 miles. I've never had a set of off-road tires last more than 50,000 miles. So really you can never save money by doing what your are describing.

You can break even by buying another car that gets 30mpg for $6,800 (say a used civic) and save the Jeep for fun.

Spend a few hundred on some 32" sahara take-offs for the weekly drive, and swap the 35's on for the weekend fun.

I did not expect it to be popular being everyone pushes 35's or bigger but it is an opinion and everyone has one. That's why I asked. Thanks for your help.

drop down if you need to. I went 33's and am completely happy. They are as big as some "35s" If you need sahara take offs with low mileage, ive got 5 with no tpms that are for sale.

Did you really gain 2 to 3 mpg from that switch? I plan on switching TO mud grapplers ha.

So those are the Kelly Safari TSRs? Pretty nice looking tread pattern.
