I thought the shock bump stops are soft and are there to soften, not to limit suspension travel?

You need to limit it. TF 2.5 BB with rubiunlimited springs and the wheel well seam is also beat up with a 5Lb hammer.
Front, took out all the egg crate and other stuff in the front wheel well and still hits the bracket that is welded to the framing.
