I did the chop and winch on my 07 Sahara and transferred it to my 10 sport when I traded it in. 3+ years and still going:

Default stock stubby

hey sharkbite, which kit did you used to make end cap clean like that (that short & without plastic rivet)? I like it a lot!
And how didyou put a winch on your factory bumper?
Thanks!

Okay...that bumper and winch setup is nothing short of kickass! The stubby mod is awesome. I REALLY want to know how to put the winch in the OEM bumper. That would save me a s^i+ load of money. Please feel free to tell us all how you did it. Where did you get the winch plate? How did you cut the holes for the fairlead?

Thanks. I saw a similar version on this site a few years ago and decided to try it. The ends are not caps, they are just cut so that they could be folded back and plastic welded(melted) back together at the seams. I used a $30 universal winch plate from Harbor Freight and trimmed it to fit. It's bolted to the frame rails upside down with a hole cut in the face of the bumper and plastic for the cable to go through. I used a torch on the metal, but a sawzall, cutoff wheel etc would work. I have seen several upright mounts with the HF plate that look very good and may be a little easier to do.

Looks like it may be time to bust out the Dewalt sawzall next weekend and cut a bumper down. We have a HF store here so I may go look for the winch plate there while I am in Jeep modding mode. Any winch brand/model suggestions? I wanted to get a Warn Powerplant 9.5 but looking at the way yours is in the front bumper I don't think the install would be nearly as clean.

Mine is a 15 year old Ramsey 8500, but about anything with a separate solonoid box should work for this type of install. Our HF didn't have the plate in stock, so I ordered it from their website- it was called a universal winch channel.

I wonder if a MileMarker hydraulic winch would work....hmmmm. No solenoid box to worry about.

EDIT: Just looked at them on a vendor site. I am thinking that probably wouldn't work.
