Default Doing research to pick a winch...how high a weight limit?

I'm sure my dumb questions have been asked and answered a bunch of times, but the search function is not working...

My by budget is flexible, I don't expect to need it vert often but don't want to goto use it and have it crap out on me.

How do you pick the weight loading?

Just my general instinct tells me that I want more power than less, I figure a jeep stuck up to the axles in mud is going to take a lot more pulling strength than one thats high centered.

I have an Ace front bumper with grade 8 hardware, my shackles/d rings are rated for 10-11k pounds

I also like products with decent warrantys, not really looking for the least expensive model out there but not looking to get the flashiest one to waste money!

My understanding is you want to the winch to be able to pull a minimum of 1.5 times your vehicle weight -- so, at least an 8,000 lb winch (more is better). Also, look at reviews on duty cycle and heat generation (especially if you run synthetic cable) on the winch you select if you're doing extended pulls.

Personally, I'm a Warn fan for winches ... they're reliable, made in USA, and you can get parts for 40 year old winches. I'm rebuilding a Warn 8274 built in 1982 to put on my son's 68 Bronco, I can get parts, and Warn Customer Service still supports it -- even sent me orginal stickers for free. If you can find one of these and rebuild it you can't go wrong ... double the line speed of it's nearest competitor, very strong, can upgrade to dual motors, easy to maintain/rebuild, and not much heat generated. Downside is it is large but it will generate envy.

My Warn M8000 doesn't have any issues pulling at extereme angles on my 2dr JK. And, I've seen one pull a TJ up/over a 10' foot 100% vertical cliff (i.e. was straight up hanging by the wire) -- got admit I wimped out on that portion of the trail .

All the above IMHO of course -- I'm sure there will be lots of other opinions on brand.

Four Wheeler mag did a Winch Shootout couple of years ago: http://www.fourwheeler.com/how-to/12...inch-shootout/

Warn did win ... although I'm a Warn fan, how they weighted some of their criteria in that decision was a little stupid -- so, I'm not sure Warn should have won. But, the info is useful in making your own decision.

8,000 for 2 door, 10,00 for unlimited. Just my opinion.

Id say at least an 8000 for a 2 door and a 9000 for a four door but as has been said more is better. Ive got a 15 year old Warn XD9000i Im pretty happy with. Its on its second Jeep.

I have a SmittyBilt XC10 10k. I have only needed it once and it worked great. I paid in the $300's from 4WD.com when they had their sidewalk sale. Came with free cover. If you don't think you will use it a couple of times a month I suggest the Smittybilt.

I imagine the Warn would be more reliable but at a premium cost.

Would suggest not going too big on the winch. 9000-9500 is fine (even if you drive a two door, you might be pulling out your buddy's four door, LOL). More powerful pull winches usually have a couple disadvantages: Slower (more gearing) and shorter line (thicker and stronger, but less fits on spool).

I'm going to spend some time reading the shoot out...

Although I have a two door I envision being in situations where in
M helping out with someone in a loaded 4 door

I liked the Warn VR8000-S
