Still wouldn't hurt anything to clean it up and get the ID measurements from bottom to top and in several different places.

I was referring to the top of the race in the picture where that part is worn thin. That hole has to be oval if that is what I am seeing. I am not sure what type of wheelin you are planning on but might be the right time to get your nippers on a used D44 front axle. Phone Robbie at Motech in Vegas as he does a lot of 6.2LT/10spd conversions and they must be hard on the D44 front. He may know an owner considering a D60 upgrade.

Wow, I recently rebuilt a front axle for a friend that was complaining of noise and pulling in his truck and it was obvious someone had been in it and screwed up the setup pretty bad. This is a whole nother level! Wow... If the housing will still carry bearing races tight it should work but dang that is rough! I would highly recommend buying or borrowing tools to measure pinion depth since there no way you can work from what you've got.

I don't think I've ever seen a diff run completely dry. Pretty crazy to see.

I'll try to remember to take some pictures of the pinion and bearing from when I lost the fluid on the highway, 65 mph when it started whining, barely got it to the should and down to about 10 mph when it seized - It was not pretty.
