Default Difference-2012 to 2014 (engine&tranny)

I understand they made a transmission change after 2012. If this is true is there a reason when buying used to avoid the year 2012? Is there anything else I should be aware of regarding the year 2012 as opposed to 2013 and newer. Also I'm considering installing an Atlas transfer case, any known issues with changing cases. Thanks!!!!

I thought the change was between 11/12. I'm pretty sure 12-14 has very little changes in engine/trans.

You may be right, but I was told that the tranny was different. I also heard that the computer won't let you change to an atlas due to the computer program. I need to know this before I make a purchase.

If you're referring to the automatic 5 speed there was a programming change between 2012 and 2013 models. For the 2012 models when you use the "auto-stick" it sets the highest gear the transmission will shift to allowing you to set it to '4' and the transmission will shift normally up and down but not shift beyond 4th. This is good for those who haven't re-geared and have larger tires since it keeps the revs up on the highway.

In 2013 they went to true auto-stick where you have to touch the stick for every gear change. It's just a preference issue for some.

The ATLAS transfer case page doesn't list working with the A580 transmission used in 2012+ Jeeps. It should work ok with 2012+ manual 6 speeds.

Here's the A580 with the stock xfer case.

My 2012 automatic 5spd has both modes. If you drop it into the (+/-) mode it'll auto shift the transmission but with the overdrive off, as in a sport mode. Then if you hold it to the side for two seconds it'll change into a true auto-stick mode.

be aware that some 2012 and early 13's had cylinder head issues. I had a 13 and know a 14 and I like the way the 12 automatics were programed. much better for me then the 13 and 14's.

Interesting...my 2012 does not work the way yours does. Mine works as the owner's manual describes it...ERS or electronic range select shift control simply allows the driver to limit the highest available gear when the shift lever is in the drive position. For example, if you shift the transmission into third gear, the transmission will never shift above third gear but will shift down into second and first gear normally. The owner's manual does not mention anything about holding the lever to the side for two seconds (except for exiting the mode by holding the lever to the right until "D" is displayed) or any other mode of operation for ERS.
