Default Dealer says this, here says that

I took Jeep to dealer for clunky steering and they said my aftermarket Tera Flex steering stabalizer is failing and is causing clunky steering. I have the same problem that alot of people described here. Guess I can try a bigger dealership.

Take the steering stabilizer off and run without one. If the clunk still exists, it doesn't have anything to do with the stabilizer and the stabilizer is simply a comfort feature. Not that this will solve your dealer issues, but it will get your headed in the right direction.

My guess and without much to go on is that you need to look at the axle U Joints.

that's what i would do - pulling the stabilizer is super easy and it will verify if the problem was it.

I put the stock stabalizer back on and it's still there, but not as pronounced.

well sure.. the stock stabilizer is weaker and is giving more when your noise happens. the aftermarket stabilizer holds everything tighter so any clunks are amplified thru everything a bit more.

not caused by the stabilizer tho..

I'd remove the ss too, but then I'd beat the service writer over the head for his stupidity. Search "steering clunk" and you'll find the answer to the problem. It's not the ss.

Went back to the dealer and had the technician ride with me and he immediately knew it was the intermediate shaft. The tech said they have replaced few already. Parts dept didn't have any in stock so they have to order it. Tech also said the way it's designed could cause the clunk to return. If it does then I'll just live with it.

There's a way to fix it so it doesn't return. Search it and you'll find it.

Just had the intermediate shaft replaced under warranty. No clunky steering. Now the test of time.
