I ran 35's on a 89 xj with stock shafts and 4.88's for 2 years with tons of hard trails and never broke anything. However, the guy i sold it to was a little harder on it and managed to shatter chromoly shafts within 2 trips. A lot of it is in how you drive. I have a rubicon now with 35's and am planning on 37's. If i break that i am doing the dynatrac prorock 44.

the D44 is like 8.5" and the D30 is like 7" ... that is not exact, but it is close. The tip of the 5.13 pinion gear was smaller than a nickel I think. The D30 R&P felt like it weighed half what the D44 did too.
That said... I drive super EZ on the trail, using more gearing than skinny pedal. I am hoping that will same me.

Is there a huge difference in the size of the D30 pinion when comparing 4.88's to 5.13's? I was planning on 5.13's when I made the jump to 35's, but you guys have me reconsidering now.

I have a thread going about this. I cant get a lot of info, but the bare housing is $1995 from dynatrac. Hopefully one of the vendors will try to get an even lower price. The unit will take all of the stock parts from a rubi 44. So you dont have to worry about bending anything.

I don't know that it is anything to worry about, per se. if it was that big of a deal I would not have got them put in after but it is on my mind for sure. I would like to have a 44 put in the front, I know it would be all the axle I ever need with the way I drive.

Here is a bit of a comparison. The D30 is 0.3" smaller than the D35 that is shown (D30 is 7.2", D35 is 7.5", D44 is 8.5").
Also notice the broken teeth on the D44. Not uncommon when you run big tires with low gears (that is a 4.88). Now just imagine how tiny the D30 gets.
