D60 rear and D44 front...... or?
So I just purchased a 2010 JK unlimited sports and its getting ready for its build.
I need to decide what axles to put under her and was thinking a d60 rear and a built D44 front with some HD knuckles and 35 spline shafts. I am only planning on 37" tires so would doing the D60 be overkill? I am going to be hitting some pretty narley trails with this rig and plan on driving it to the trails (1000+ mile road trips some times, Rubicon, Moab, Etc.). I was considering a D60 front but holly crap are they expensive! I was also worried about the weight too.
What do you guys think?
Another question too. I didnt get the Rubicon so I dont have the low T case and was considering an atlas 4 speed. Have any opinions on this?

If you're asking if a D60 front is necessary, probably not if you are only going to 37's. But you know one day you'll see someone on 40's and start thinking.....what if ???....I wouldn't run 40's on anything less than a D60's. The way I see it you go 90% of the way and then stop short. I'd finish it off, go 100% and do the front too.
As for the Atlas 4 speed, it's the best thing since slice bread.....DO IT !!!!
Go on.....do it....you know you want to !!!.....

Interested in this as well. Already have a PR44 in the front. Thinking about a currie rock jock 60 in the rear now. Oh and have the atlas II case and that thing is wicked!

I'd get a D60 front, forego the Atlas and buy a Rubicrawler 2.72:1 Planetary reduction box and build out the OEM rear 44. Cost of the build out is 30+% less than as mentioned. While I'd certainly rather have a rear D60, I'd have a hard time making economic sense of it to run 37s.

As much as I love the Rubi Crawler, the twin stick capability of the Atlas is hard to beat.
We're now selling the PR44/60 Hybrid. This has a 35 sp ARB in a PR 44 housing with all 60 wheel ends and 35 sp outer axle shafts. It's less expensive than a full 60 front and we're very happy with the proven strength of the JK HP44 front gear set. It's a bit lighter and has better ground clearance too.
Keep in mind that a 60 front (or 44/60 combo) is 3" wider than a stock 44 (or 30) front. You'll also need to change to a wheel with a 5 on 5.5" lug pattern.

It's impossible to say. You'll see guys that can make a 37" work on a D30 and others that break with stock tires. The weight of the rig, rig drive train, your driving style and how/where you wheel all play a part. That said, we just don't see R&P failures of the JK HP front 44. With tires larger than 37", unit bearings become a concern as well as axle shafts. With my PERSONAL driving style I'd run 40's on a lightish JKU with our 44/60 (with our std shafts) and feel pretty comfy. Will it all survive for you? No one can say. If they try to tell you yes, they're clueless. Everyone is different.
