Default D30 gear instal pros please check in

Looking for the following info for my D30

1)What is the pinion bearing preload for a JK D30? 20-40in/lb?

2)What is the carrier bearing preload? 0.008" total after zero play?

3)What is the backlash spec? 0.006"

Lastly, if reusing the carrier bearings, do you preload them the same amount or less since there used?

Pinion bearing preload should be 15-30 inch lbs (new bearings).

Carrier Preload should add 7-11 inch lbs (with new bearings) to the pinion preload.

Backlash should be 0.005-0.008 inches.

For the carrier,

Wouldn't the additional torque added to the pinion be effected by what gear ratio you have?

Also, any info on the required preload for used carrier bearings? I'm only replacing the pinion bearings not the carrier ones.

smashboogie,

do you have a pre-load spec for used carrier bearings?

Sorry for the slow response, we never re-gear with out new bearings on both the pinion and carrier. Sorry we are not able to help you on that aspect of the job.

No worries, after checking the backlash with the old bearings and stock shims there is no preload on the carrier bearings and backlash was 0.012"
So we need to make some shim adjustments on the carrier bearings.
After shopping around, the only shims they sell locally that aren't $$$ are the type that go between the carrier and bearing not the bearing and housing like the factory. So we need to remove the old bearings anyway to make adjustments. At this point I am going to buy new bearings so I will use the spec you provided earlier.

what I find odd is that the shimming for carrier bearing preload was set up from the factory?

Regardless I am going to tighten up the backlash and add some preload to the bearings and then see how she runs. Wish me luck.

Ya I just regeared my D44s (front and rear) and was surprised how out of spec the front was from the factory. We ran a gear pattern just for $hits and giggles and it was downright awful. And backlash was 0.011 when it should be between 0.005 and 0.008. No idea why it was so far off from the factory but we just made sure that we got the correct backlash when adding our carrier shims. Good luck!!
