D-Ring/Shackles, to paint or not?

I work with 16 ton LAVs in the Marine Corps. There is a STRICT policy within the community that you don't paint shackles because if they start to crack you see them till it's too late. I know the first response is that a JK doesn't weigh anywhere near that much, but I didn't spend that much on my JK to risk a shackle breaking when winching (you'd be surprised how much the weight of a vehicle increases when only mired at axle deep, I'm trying to find a class we use to share)

Had mine powder coated. At $5 a shackle I'm ok with it if they get beat to heck. I am also running the rubber protectors (not sure what else to call them) to prevent them from beating the heck out of the bumper.

Well 75% of the reason I was going to paint them is that the red plastic things on the hoop part look more orangey/pink, but I too have those rubber rings to keep the shackles from bouncing around
So I think I'll just remove those and go with straight silver
Especially if someone who handles heavy duty military vehicles points out a pretty good reason not to paint them!
