Check the MFG's 'recommended rim width' specs for the tires you want. Many shops will not mount wide tires on narrow rims...

Go with 16's so your tires don't stick a mile outside the fenders.

I went with ProComps so that I could have the 4.5" BS.

If I went with a 16x8 would the 5" of backspacing give me any problems? I'm looking at getting tires in the 285/70-16 range which, if I'm not mistaken, would make the tire roughly 11.5" wide.

You will be fine. I would not go beyond 295/75R16 (33x11.5) with 16x8 with 5" backspacing. Yes, you can run that setup and be okay.

I've been using the 16x7 Soft 8s with no problems at all. Even aired down, I've never popped a bead.

I'm currently running 285/75 R16s.
