Cooltech Versamount Alternative
I installed my Cobra 75 last week, and have been debating how I want to mount the hand unit. I decided I really liked the location of the Cooltech Versamount, but realized I didn't have time to get one before this weekends event. I decided to try to make my own.
At Home Depot, I just walked through the store looking at different things I could try to use to make one. I settled on a "Simpson Strong Tie" about 6 inches long. I paid $0.49 I set out taking off the plastic of the dash and locating the screw that the Varsamount uses. I marked and bent the piece of metal, drilled three holes, and mounted it up. I ground the screw backs for the "Clip" down flat. Works great, looks alot smaller than the Versamount, is easily removed to return to stock, and only cost 49 cents.
I may paint it black next week, not sure. Now I got a holder for the hand unit, and it doesn't look half bad if I do say so myself.

Great Idea. I can't even remember all the things I have made out of strong ties. They are a great source for cheap material and most of the time I can find one that is already half way made into what I am looking for. I used one to make dsword's budget caster solution. Worked great and cheap! https://www.jk-forum.com/forums/show...=budget+caster

Thanks for the kudo's. The cb works great, trail tested at Gilmer (Barnwell Mountain) last weekend and no issues at all. I paid $79 from an Ebay seller brand new. I have the Cooltech VersaMount (license plate) with a 4 ft Firestik. It took a hell of a beating with all the brush/limbs hanging over the trail, but came out fine at the end.
The handle mount takes only minor skill and 30 minutes to make (including smoke breaks) It is much smaller than the Cooltech version it is copied from and feels less intrusive than it would if bigger.
