Steel wheels bend easy. Aluminum ones break or rip big pieces off. You can't fix the Aluminum one to get off the trail. But no matter how bad you smack a steely... you can straighten it enough to hold air and get home. And it's just that... to get home... don't try to make them perfect. I always have at least 2 spare rims in the garage at all times.
