Maybe a good rule of thumb, but not true of all systems. Our cat-back kit for the JK locates the muffler forward and 1) improves off-roadability and; 2) makes the entire rear end of the Jeep appear much cleaner. The Cool Tech exhaust will give you the performance and MPG benefits - but it will not drone or increase the in-cockpit noise level to anything objectionable.

I've had a Banks Monster Cat-Back on for almost a year now, and along with the better gas mileage it has a great sound whith the top both on and off. It sounds nice and smooth during acceleration, and is not too intrusive on the cabin. The stainless steel has turned a nice shade of blue and has no signs of corrossion on the hardware as of yet. A+ to Banks, now if they would just make an intake for us...
